Barnaby

Barnaby is a gentle gelding whose story is one of compassion, perseverance and deep connection. His journey to rescue began when a kindhearted person noticed him languishing in a neighbor’s pasture for far too long, and stepped in to save him. When unforeseen medical challenges later made it impossible for her to continue caring for her animals, she reached out to us for help.

Barnaby is almost completely blind due to uveitis, a painful eye condition he has likely battled for many years. Untreated, this auto-immune condition is degenerative, and incredibly painful, and Barnaby had no one to help him for so long. Since arriving at BRRB in 2024, he has had several minimally invasive medical procedures the have been hugely successful in helping to prevent flare ups. He also wears a special sun visor on bright and sunny days as bright light can cause discomfort as well. He lives in a pasture thoughtfully designed to support blind horses, and it’s clear how well he knows his world, navigating with confidence and ease.

Barnaby is a Haflinger-Appaloosa mix with a heart and personality as big as his giant feet! He has found his perfect companion in Tilly. The two are inseparable best friends. When they aren’t grazing side by side, they can be found resting together nose to rump, soaking in the comfort of each other’s presence.

Barnaby is also true love bug and champion nuzzler, always eager to share affection with his humans. He is truly beloved by all who know him. Thus, it was terrifying when in the late summer of 2025, he had to go in for emergency surgery to clear a blockage in his intestinal tract. Thankfully, he made a full recovery, with Tillly by his side for the entirety of course. While he now deals with frequent gas colic, likely caused by scar tissue from the surgery, he is carefully monitored throughout the day With a specialized diet and targeted supplements to support his ongoing needs, he is doing exceptionally well.

We are endlessly grateful for his strength, his sweetness and the joy he brings to everyone around him. We know you’ll love him!
