DONKEYS

Hee-haw, Lily, Brooklyn

These amazing girls came to us from a loving owner, that due to unforeseen circumstances, could no longer care for them. When she reached out to us for help in 2024, we were thrilled to have to space and perfect habitat for these wonderful donkeys. Hee-haw is mother to Lily and adopted mom to Brooklyn. Brooklyn had what is thought as failure to thrive as a young foal, when Hee-Haw stepped in and nurse and nurtured her right along with baby Lily, at which point Brooklyn began to thrive.

Lily is the friendliest, and sassiest, donkey we’ve ever known. She keeps us on our toes, sneaking our water bottles out of the 4x4s, and actually trying to get into the vehicles as well! Brooklyn is on the shy side, but so very sweet once she warms up. Hee-Haw is the matriarch, and we sure do love her calm gentle energy.

The girls live in what’s called a “dry lot” to help carefully manage their diet. Donkeys originated from the desert and therefore are built to walk miles in order to find food. Donkeys living in a typical grass pasture will over eat, and then gain too much weight, which is dangerous to their health and remarkably shortens their live span. We work to include enrichment activities to liven up their days, which includes limited daily access to a wooded pasture, and multiple weekly walks around the farm and surrounding neighborhoods, as well as an obstacle course complete with a see saw!
