Roy is a mustang from California who came to live at BRRB when our facilities manager Chris was inspired by the spirit of rescue and decided to offer a home to a horse in need on his own, under the umbrella of the sanctuary.
The term mustang refers to the herds of wild horses that are currently roaming ten different states in the western US. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and Forestry Service manage the populations by rounding them up periodically by helicopter and then auctioning off a percentage of the horses. This stressful “round up” devastatingly splits up families and often causes life ending injuries and significant emotional trauma. These horses can make wonderful partners but require much more time, patience, and knowledge than a domesticated horse.
Roy had been gentled (able to be haltered, have his feet trimmed by a farrier, and loaded onto a trailer) by his previous owner. These are essential skills for a domestic life as they allow him to receive routine vet and farrier care.
Roy arrived in 2025 and has been bonding with his new dad Chris, and growing his skills with Lindsey. He was also recently introduced to Bodie and the two have quickly become fast friends.
