Llama

Tom

Tom is one of two llamas at the sanctuary. He lives with our other llama, Larry, and 3 sheep. Tom joined us back in 2024 when his wild herd lost their land and had to be rounded up. Never having been handled, he was of course terrified of humans. Furthermore, he was separated from his family. When he arrived at the sanctuary he had been through so much change and trauma. We knew we would have our work cut out for us to show him that he was safe.

Within a few weeks of living beside Larry, Tom started to relax. We could see how curious he seemed to get to know the girls and Larry. There was some very mild negotiation for determining the herd hierarchy, and soon the boys decided to share the lead spot.

Llamas are excellent guardian animals and Tom is no exception. While Larry and the sheep graze, Tom can often be found right beside them, keeping a watchful eye on the farm from his vantage point. He has made such great progress with learning to trust us as well, allowing us to halter him, trim his feet, and hand feed him. We have loved watching Tom’s journey!
