HORSE
Oak
Oak is a senior horse, with a calm demeanor and gentle nature. He came to the sanctuary after being rescued from a lot in Tennessee. He was malnourished, had a broken hip and showed so many other signs of neglect. He was first rescued by a local sanctuary, along with his best friend Bayou who also resides here. When it became clear that he had significant medical needs as well as mobility issues, they reached out to us to see if we’d be willing to take him. It was a package deal, of course, and we welcomed Bayou as well.
As a senior horse, Oak has many of the ailments that go along with age, including poor dentition and arthritis. He also has Cushing’s disease which causes many issues for him, including weight loss, poor-shedding coat, muscle loss, and a high risk of laminitis. To ensure his health and comfort, he receives a daily medication, supplements, and multiple soaked meals per day.
He lives in a herd with his best friend Bayou, and has accepted two additional best friends into his life, Arya and Viggo. The 4 of them are always close together, grazing or munching at a hay feeder. The staff and volunteers at BRRB all have a soft spot for Oak, and we make sure to let him know how loved he is.
